Present & Future Modals
★ MODULE 1: MUST ★

MUST: High Certainty & Deductions (95% - 100%)

1. What is MUST? (¿Qué significa MUST?)

We use MUST when there is clear observable evidence or undeniable logic. You are 95% to 100% sure that something is true.

Subject + MUST + Base Verb (Bare Infinitive)
2. Present Deductions (Deducciones en Presente)

Observable clues right now in front of you:

"The lights are on; someone must be home."
"He has 5 sports cars; he must earn a lot."
Tiene 5 autos deportivos; debe ganar mucho dinero.
3. Future Certainty (Expectativa Futura Segura)

When scheduled plans or intensive preparation make an outcome virtually certain:

"The plane left on time; it must arrive soon."
El avión salió a tiempo; debe llegar pronto.
"She studied 10 hours daily; she must pass tomorrow."
Estudió 10 horas diarias; seguro que aprobará mañana.
4. Mistakes & Negatives to Avoid

Watch out for these common student traps:

❌ He must to study. ➜ ✔️ He must study!
Nunca coloques 'to' después de un modal.
Must not = Prohibition vs Can't = Impossibility
'You must not enter.' (Prohibido) vs 'It can't be true.' (Imposible).
★ MODULE 2: MAY ★

MAY: Realistic Possibility & Permission (~50%)

1. What is MAY? (¿Qué significa MAY?)

We use MAY when an event has a realistic, balanced chance (~50% possibility) or to request/give formal permission.

Subject + MAY + Base Verb (Bare Infinitive)
2. Present & Future Possibility

Realistic open outcomes in daily life:

"Take an umbrella; it may rain this afternoon."
"Where is Carlos? He may be in the cafeteria."
¿Dónde está Carlos? Puede que esté en la cafetería.
3. Polite Permission (Permiso Formal)

The gold standard in academic and professional English:

"May I ask a question about today's assignment?"
(Permiso formal).
"Students may leave early after submitting exams."
4. Negative: MAY NOT (Posibilidad Negativa)

Possibility that something will NOT happen:

"The professor may not give homework today."
❌ She mays come. ➜ ✔️ She may come!
★ MODULE 3: MIGHT ★

MIGHT: Lower Possibility, Doubt & Conditionals (30% - 40%)

1. What is MIGHT? (¿Qué significa MIGHT?)

We use MIGHT when something is possible, but with clear hesitation, doubt, or smaller statistical odds (30-40%).

Subject + MIGHT + Base Verb
2. Hesitation in Present Situations

Expressing personal doubt or guessing without clues:

"I might go to the gym, but I feel tired."
"Where are my keys? They might be in my jacket."
¿Dónde están mis llaves? Podrían estar en mi chamarra.
3. Conditional & Hypothetical "IF"

Outcomes contingent on external factors:

"If I finish early, I might join you."
"If you buy a ticket, you might win."
4. Negative: MIGHT NOT (Quizás no)

Doubt about having enough time or completing an action:

"We might not have enough time before the film."
❌ He mights rain. ➜ ✔️ It might rain!
★ MODULE 4: SYNTHESIS ★

Comparative Analysis: May vs Might vs Must

⚡ MUST (95% - 100%)

Certeza Lógica: Evidencia directa ineludible.

"It's 42°C; it must be boiling hot!"
Hace 42°C; ¡debe hacer un calor sofocante!
🌿 MAY (~50%)

Posibilidad Realista: Probabilidad media balanceada o permiso.

"The sky is grey; it may rain later."
🔮 MIGHT (30% - 40%)

Menor Probabilidad: Duda o condición hipotética.

"If I find energy, I might go."
Si encuentro energía, podría ir.
💡 Negatives Nuance (Matiz Importante en Negativos):
May not / Might not = It's possible that NOT
'She might not come.' (Quizás no venga - posibilidad negativa).
Must not = Strict Prohibition / Unacceptable
'You must not enter.' (Prohibición estricta - no lo hagas).
